How a Growing Dome Works
A Growing Dome is more than a traditional greenhouse. It's a polycarbonate geodesic dome greenhouse combining structural strength, insulation, thermal mass, and natural ventilation. Built around passive solar greenhouse principles, these integrated systems help maintain growing conditions and reduce energy demands throughout Canada's changing seasons.
Geodesic design
How does a geodesic dome work? Its interconnected triangular framework distributes structural loads throughout the shell, providing exceptional strength against wind and snow. This efficient geodesic dome structure also allows sunlight to enter from multiple angles throughout the day.
Polycarbonate panels
Our 16 mm multi-wall polycarbonate panels provide superior insulation compared to single-pane glass or thin greenhouse films. Lightweight, UV-protected, and impact-resistant, they help retain warmth while allowing natural light to reach your plants.
Structural framing
Precision-cut, colour-coded components assemble into a rigid geodesic frame. Designed for efficient on-site assembly with a small crew, typically without cranes or heavy equipment.
Reflective north-wall insulation
An insulated north wall reduces heat loss, while its reflective interior redirects available sunlight back toward the growing area. This helps maximize natural light and improve thermal efficiency during shorter winter days.
Above-ground pond / climate battery
The integrated water pond acts as a natural thermal battery, absorbing warmth during the day and gradually releasing it overnight. This thermal mass system helps stabilize greenhouse temperatures and reduce supplemental heating demands.
Intake and exhaust fans
Every Growing Dome includes solar-powered intake fans and exhaust vents that help the greenhouse breathe, regulating airflow, humidity, and excess heat. Additional fans can improve summer cooling, working alongside natural ventilation, shading, and crop selection to maintain healthier growing conditions with less manual intervention.
Solar-powered undersoil system
A 12V solar-powered ventilation system circulates warm interior air through underground tubing beneath the growing beds. This transfers heat into the surrounding soil, helping regulate root-zone temperatures and retain valuable solar warmth.
Snowshed entryway
A sheltered entryway with a 36 × 80-inch door helps manage snow accumulation around the entrance while providing convenient access for gardeners, tools, and equipment. Multiple entryways can be added for larger dome sizes, and airlock entryways to any design.
Foundation wall
A 24-inch foundation wall provides a stable perimeter base for the dome. Foundation options and insulation requirements vary by dome size, site conditions, and intended use.
Warranties and support
Every Growing Dome kit includes detailed assembly guides, instructional videos, and Canadian-based support. Our systems are backed by a 5-year structural framing warranty and 10-year polycarbonate panel warranty, subject to warranty terms.
Engineered for four-season growing
The real advantage of a Growing Dome is how its systems work together. Geodesic strength, insulated glazing, passive solar heating, thermal mass, and ventilation create a more efficient growing environment.
Supplemental heating is still needed for winter growing, but these integrated technologies help reduce energy demands, making Growing Domes a practical solution for Canada's challenging climate.
