How a Growing Dome Works
Every Growing Dome combines a geodesic shell with a climate system that holds its temperature through a Canadian winter. Here is what goes into one.
-
Geodesic designA triangulated geodesic shape spreads snow and wind load evenly across the whole structure, so it stays strong with less framing material and lets light reach every corner of the dome. -
Polycarbonate panelsTwin-wall, UV-resistant polycarbonate glazing insulates far better than single-pane glass while staying light, shatter-resistant and easy to ship in a kit. -
Structural framingPre-cut, colour-coded struts and hardware assemble into a rigid frame on site, with no crane required. -
Reflective north-wall insulationAn insulated, reflective north wall cuts heat loss and bounces daylight back onto your plants instead of out the back of the dome. -
Above-ground pond / climate batteryA central water tank acts as a thermal battery: it soaks up daytime heat and releases it overnight to even out the temperature swing. -
Intake and exhaust fansAutomatic intake and exhaust venting manages airflow and summer heat so the dome breathes without constant attention. -
Solar-powered undersoil systemA 12V solar undersoil loop moves warmth into the root zone, keeping soil active when the air outside is below freezing. -
Snowshed entrywayA snowshed entry with a 36 by 80 inch door keeps weather out and gives you a sheltered way in and out. -
Foundation wallA 24 inch foundation wall anchors the dome and adds insulated thermal mass at the base. -
Warranties and supportKits include full online guide access, video and Canadian support, backed by the warranty terms confirmed with your quote.

How do Growing Domes stay warm during the Winter?
The greenhouse is equipped with a sophisticated self-regulated heating system that harnesses the sun's natural warmth. Specially designed insulated panels focus sunlight onto a central water tank, creating optimal growing conditions. An insulated north-facing wall traps warm air, while an insulated foundation ring prevents frost and maintains a stable ground temperature inside the dome.
In addition, every Growing Dome Greenhouse includes a standard aeration system beneath the soil of the raised garden beds. This innovative system leverages the consistent temperature of the soil, tapping into its thermal mass to store and release energy. Additional geothermal systems can be added for an enhanced effect. Solar-powered fans circulate air within the greenhouse, contributing to a well-balanced environment.
With optimal sun exposure, the combined effect of these features enables the dome to maintain a temperature approximately 20-25ºC warmer than the outside conditions. For very cold winter temperatures, some owners choose to supplement with additional heating options such as electric heaters, propane units, or wood-fired stoves. Others have found success with Ground to Air Heat Transfer (GAHT) systems as part of their foundation for an extra source of heat.
